How “green” are you?

Sacred Site for Green ThumbsI saw this website called www.myfootprint.org where you can take a quiz to see what kind of ecological impact your living style has on the Earth. In my current living state, I require about 19 acres to live. Which means that if everyone was like me, we would need 4.3 planet Earths for everyone to survive.

The idea of taking care of our planet is a high value for those in the area of Germany that we are moving to so I have to make a choice:

  • 1) I could just be the “ignorant” American and go on with my life as normal (which would probably make many of the people around us angry)
  • 2) I could be offended that they would expect me to do things the way they do them and try to make everyone else conform to my way of doing things. (boy, if you thought option 1 would upset my neighbors…)
  • or 3) I could learn how the Germans do things and change the way I do things to integrate with their society
  • There’s a fine line that missionaries walk when integrating with a culture. As missionaries we are called to show God’s love and teach those we come in contact with about how Jesus Christ is the only way to have a close, intimate relationship with God.

Missionaries are welcomed when they fulfill that calling. They are shunned (or worse) when they come not only sharing about Jesus Christ but also pushing their personal/cultural values on top of the Gospel. The New Testament is filled with different situations where Paul had to struggle with those who were the “circumcision group” where they added to the gospel the Jewish cultural value of circumcision to the Gentiles.

Please pray with us and other missionaries that we speak only the Gospel to the world and do not add to it our cultural values.

So did you hear the news about the possibilities of lettuce making people sick? No really, I’m not spamming your blog but it was on Dateline tonight (Sunday - April 30). Ok, so you’re not in the US; surf the net - you’re bound to find something.

Well, I think I ate some bad lettuce yesterday so I’ve just been browsing the internet tonight doing what I call “research” on ministry websites. I’ve been doing this for about a month or longer now.

Anyways, I’ve somewhat surprised about how many GEM ministry websites or blog sites I’ve come across. Really, it’s funny. Perhaps you can explain the whole blog thing too me. I’m not sure I get it. Sure, I might leave a comment hear or there but really why blog? Is it for fun? Is it to recruit ministry partners? Keep in touch with ministry partners? Family?

No, really. I’m serious here. Why blog? How in the world is it so popular? You know about the email containing a link from a Portuguese blogger containing his advise for missionary wanna-be’s. So I’m trying to decide whether to be alarmed that I can so easily gain access to people’s blogs (some whom I’ve never even met) - or - whether I just need to get with the blogging program already.

Now, really this is research…I’m planning to leave this comment on at least four sites tonight.

I understand your question. I guess my blog is mainly to recruit North Americans to becoming ministry partners and once we make the move it will also be used to keep them up-to-date on things going on in our lives.

While I know I have many non-North Americans reaching the site (Guten Tag by the way), my target audience is on the West side of the Atlantic.

I think blogging can be a useful tool if you are willing to put the time into it but if you don’t think so, stay away. There’s nothing worse that going to a blog and seeing that nothings been added for months.

I am also using this blog to work on my writing skills. Being a computer programmer, I do need to be able to write well but I have never been able to.

Hope that helps you out.
